Mobile Wagers Drive Record Handle and Operator Revenue

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board releases monthly gaming revenue reports, working with the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division to manage, track, and archive the data. In 2025, the total sports betting handle in Louisiana rose 15% from 2024, topping $4.24 billion. Online wagers accounted for $3.97 billion, while retail sportsbooks generated $274.5 million. Mobile betting continued to dominate, reflecting nationwide trends driven by convenience, promotions, and live notifications.

Operator net revenue increased 21% to $520.2 million for the year, with online platforms contributing $491.5 million and retail venues $28.8 million. Despite only a 2% year-over-year increase in December’s handle, net revenue jumped 77%, highlighting the market’s strong end-of-year momentum.

Tax Collections and Fantasy Sports Growth

Louisiana collected $92.3 million in sports betting taxes in 2025, up 42% from 2024. December alone saw $12.7 million in tax receipts, nearly double the same month in 2024. These funds support state programs including early childhood education and gambling addiction treatment.

The state’s tax structure, 15% on net online revenue and 10% on retail, helps maintain substantial revenue despite a smaller overall market compared to New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania.

Fantasy sports also contributed to market growth. Entry fees rose from $13 million in 2024 to $13.7 million in 2025, with December posting $4.8 million in volume. Net revenue from contests reached $1.5 million, a 6% increase over the year. Analysts note fantasy sports continue to attract new bettors, particularly during the NFL season.

Market Outlook for 2026

Industry observers expect mobile wagering to maintain its dominant position, with tax collections likely to remain strong. Increased competition between operators is expected to generate more Louisiana sportsbook promotions, live betting options, and in-game experiences.

While Louisiana’s market is smaller than major states like New York ($26 billion in handle in 2025), the year’s performance indicates sustained adoption and growth opportunities for both operators and the state’s regulated gaming framework.
