Saints Start Training Camp With Hope For Future

The New Orleans Saints enter training camp looking to build on a rocky campaign that saw them slog through a 1-8 start before rallying to close the year 6-11. Louisiana sports betting fans watched quarterback Tyler Shough take over the reins and give the franchise something to build around heading into 2026. The development of a young signal-caller has fans in the Pelican State believing better days could be ahead.

Shough's Rookie Emergence

Shough completed 221 of his 327 pass attempts for a 67.6 completion percentage, throwing for 2,384 yards with 10 touchdowns against six interceptions across 11 games, including nine starts. He also chipped in 186 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground, showing dual-threat ability that could serve New Orleans well going forward. His steady improvement as the season progressed gave the coaching staff confidence he can be the long-term answer at the position.

Offseason Additions Bring New Optimism

New Orleans made several moves this offseason aimed at surrounding Shough with more talent, headlined by the addition of running back Travis Etienne. Adding a proven playmaker in the backfield should take pressure off the young quarterback and give the offense more balance. The hope is that a more complete roster allows Shough to keep developing without having to carry the offense on his own.

Super Bowl Odds Remain Long

Despite the internal optimism, oddsmakers are not buying into a quick turnaround. DraftKings currently lists the Saints at +9000 odds to win the Super Bowl, among the longest odds in the league. That number reflects how much rebuilding still needs to happen, even with a promising young quarterback in place. Anyone using Louisiana sports betting apps will face better chances of thriving with a prop bet on Etienne. New Orleans will need to prove doubters wrong on the field before those numbers move much.

A Wide Open NFC South

The NFC South could be one of the more unpredictable divisions in football this season, which may work in the Saints' favor. The Carolina Panthers narrowly captured the division title a year ago and return much of the same core, hoping continuity leads to further growth. In Atlanta, a new coaching staff inherits a quarterback battle between Michael Penix and Tua Tagovailoa. However, the roster around them is loaded with talent like running back Bijan Robinson, receiver Drake London, and tight end Kyle Pitts, who just signed a three-year extension worth $53 million.

Tampa Bay faces more uncertainty after losing receiver Mike Evans to the 49ers and linebacker Lavonte David to retirement. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is reportedly seeking a new contract, and defensive lineman Vita Vea has requested a trade, adding instability to a roster that once looked like the division's best. With so much volatility surrounding their rivals, the Saints may have an opening to sneak back into contention if Shough continues his development and the new additions pay off early in the season.
